Our World
Clementine Schneidermann
She was born in 1991 and is now a French documentary photographer. She is based in Cardiff but recently completed a practice-based PhD at the University of South Wales. Clementine works on long term projects. Her approach is collaborative and playful, which shows her interest in creative practices in social documentaries. Clementine has an interest in different communities. She also is a co-founder of the Ffasiwn Stiwdio.
Her interest in photography has continued growing from when she was younger, in an interview she described her camera as “her best companion” this would seem strange to a lot of people but young photographers like her and like me understand this concept. She also shared that when she was younger, she would look up to other women photographers. |

Detailed analysis of a single image
In this photo is a young girl who is in the army, she is wearing her army clothes and because she is so young, she only gets to use a little plastic gun. In the background is nature; trees, wooden stairs, and a platform. At the top there is a southern looking pine tree. It is hot and it looks like nice weather. She is wearing a short-sleeved top which, with all the signs of the hot weather, I believe that it could be in a southern country where it is hotter.
In the photo she is standing up in the center. She is looking one way but pointing the gun the opposite direction, when I look at this photo, I want to see what she is looking at and see who she is pointing the gun at. The way she is holding on to the gun seems like she does not really care, she makes it look like she does not care or wants to be there. I wonder why she is there? Why is she not leaving? Why does she not want to be there?
When I look at the photo, I immediately look at the girl and then to either side of her she is in a camp, an army camp she is staying in the army's campsite. When I look at this army camp site, I am shocked it is pretty, relaxing, and is not all muddy floors. That is why she is sad she cannot be in a battle here it is a lovely place, and she might not want it to be ruined.
This photo is part of a series of a seventeen-year-old female army recruit, and just this one photo shows a whole story let alone with the rest of the photos. This tells me a story of a young girl; she is disgusted by what she sees. She does not want to be there; she tried to escape, trying to run. She feels trapped and wants to get out and never return.
The photo has good lighting her face is shaded which represents her being there physically but not mentally. She is there but is not there. The lighting in the background is very bright, it makes you want to smile but then the girl makes you want to cry.

The World That I have Seen
With this series of photos, I just wanted to take a camera and take photos of what caught my eye. I worked on them for several days, before and after school. All these photos, I have taken with my iPhone twelve mini. For this reason of wanting to experiment more and have more photos to practice editing.
For this experiment, it went well but could have gone better. Some of the photos I have taken are a bit blurry and all vary between closeness and being thurther away. There was a lot of colour in these photos and I want to show that the world is not always happy, to do this I am going to put the photos in black and white.
The Darkness comes
For the next part of my world, I wanted to show the world is not full of sunshine and rainbows all the time. To express this, I wanted to turn the photos from above black and white.
After I put the pictures in the app photos, I decided to change the colour and the tone. This left a feeling in some photos that it is dark and dull, but others are not. This is when I realized not all photos in black and white are sad.
Direct Comparison
In this photo it is bright and colorful. This photo has different shades of colors: blue, purple, black and red. The lines separate the picture and make it look abstract. In this capture, you can see the top of a house which is an orangey colour. The big pole with the wires coming out is a telegraph poll.

In this photo it is dark and dull. This photo has still got different shades even though it is just black, white and grey. Even though there is no colour this photo does not seem sad it is still interesting.

People, Litter, Nature and Reality
For this photo shoot I was planning on just going outside with a Nikon camera and taking photos of what the world is like. I planned to walk out of the building and go to the field with my friend Sophie.
In this photo shoot I was outside for about an hour, I ended up taking loads of photos of different; people, objects, buildings. When I was walking out with Sophie, I ended up taking some photos of her behind the banister hoping to represent a girl in school locked behind doors. I also took loads of photos of buildings because that is a noticeably big representation of one thing that we see every day without searching for it. I took some photos of trash on floor I feel like this is something like a building however trash on the floor is something we hope not to see, yet no one can go a day without seeing at least a few pieces of rubbish on the floor next to a bin.
Editing & Sequencing
For my previous photo shoot, I decided to pick out six of my favorites. To make it easier and to have six of my best together.
A Rural Landscape
Today I went out with some of my family members and decided to take my camera to get some pictures as we went on a walk to a park and back.
After this walk I decided to go through my photos and was incredibly happy with the outcome. I deleted some photos as they were blurry, I got my laptop to upload all these photos as I was so happy with the outcome.
First Dark Room Experiment
Second Dark Room Experiment
Third Dark Room Experiment
For these dark room experiments, I chose some pictures and took them from photos, to be able to place them into photo shop. After I inserted the photos into this app, I went to image, adjustments and then black and white. When finishing this process, I then do the next step which is similar. For this step I go to image, adjustments and then invert, this is what allows me to use this in the dark room. Then finally I can take this into the dark room. When I do this, I must make sure that the appropriate red light is on which then I can go to the enlarger. The enlarger must fit to the size of your picture, or even a little bigger. However, before I can turn the light on, I must double check the red/orange safety light is covering the light. After doing this I need to make sure there are three trays, each one with different solutions. The first must have developer liquid, this is made by using 30ml (about 1.01 oz) of developer to 270ml (about 9.13 oz) of water to get the 300ml (about 10.14 oz) of working strength you need to develop. When you put the photographic paper in the developer you must gently lift the tray up and down for a minute. When this process is over, I then immediately put in in the stop bath, tub using tweezers. Stop bath is an acidic solution used for processing black-and-white photographic paper. Which is used to neutralize the alkaline developer, stopping the development. The last mixture to use is the fixed solution. This solution is used to remove unexposed silver, it fixes the development. I can now use tweezers to take it out of the fixed solution and place it into the sink bowl with cold running water. Finally, I can now wash the photo and take it out using the squidge to dry it and now leave it hanging on the washing line to dry with the red light on. I am now happy with my results and can scan them on the printer. I was incredibly pleased with the outcome and want to take more pictures into the darkroom to create more pieces.
Changing Colours
For this task I went up to the printer and placed my dark room photos on the scanner. I scanned one picture and chose a colour and printed it in that colour. I then took the new photo back in the draw and scanned another photo with a different colour, this then printed on top of the other colored picture which was interesting. It looked amazing but this was not the idea I had in my head so after doing three of these I decided to do something different.
School life
For this photo shoot I wanted to go outside and take photos of buildings and trees, I wanted some more photos to take in the dark room and experiment, this made me want to get more detailed photos. I used a Nikon camera for this activity as my work improves when I use a Nikon camera.
Dark Room
Leysdown-on-Sea
Three Favourites
For this task I decided to pick three of my favorite photos, that I had taken in Leysdown-on-sea. I wanted to take each of these photos and use them in the dark room. This time I took these black and white photos and inverted photos which are three of my favorites.
Brands Hatch
On the half term I went to brands hatch, this is where there is car racing and cars that people have done up. They brought their cars along to show them off. This is somewhere I love to go and decided to do a photo shoot of some of the cars and motorbikes there. I used my iPhone twelve-mini to take these photos.
Easter Sunday
Today I went out with some of my family, and we did an easter egg hunt for my younger siblings and cousins. This park was incredibly beautiful, so I decided to take some photos, I wanted to show there are some nice places in the world. To discuss my chosen topic about our world I also wanted to get some shots of people walking, having fun, and sharing the love that they have for each other.
After this photo shot, I wanted to look over my photos and when I did, I was happy with the outcome. I got to capture the exact moments that I wanted to and had no blurry or messy photos.
Making Day
For the making day I am planning to use a concertina A4 book to put my dark room pictures In. For this I am going to need to buy the concertina A4 book and need some spray glue. I am also going to do Japanese bookbinding. For this I need to print some A3 photos and need the strimmer, a needle and string.
