Victor Diop Review
What Characters does Victor Diop become in his selfies and why?
Victor becomes people that were sent away to be slaves and soldiers because they then became famous despite their struggle's. They didn't let there past destroy there future, they let there past create there story!
Why does he choose those characters?
He chooses these characters because he relates to them. Also he wants to try outfits his heritages wore.
why do you think he makes a connection between himself and the historical figures he depicts in his selfies?
I think he makes a connection between himself and the figures in his selfies because it reminds him of his heritage. IT helps him see what it felt like to be in the same outfits as what his heritage/culture wore.
what advice would he give to a young photographer?
Victor advice to young people that want to be photographers is to "start now, you don't have to wait to get a nice quality camera".

Dress Up
I decided to do a mythical character as a collage. I didn't know what to do and i don't like to draw, so i took a lot of different magazines and cut out different parts, of different types of people and photos. I used magazine’s because they have lots of different opinions and different styles. I think it went really well because i managed to get a really good mask it was a really good disguise. What inspired me about Omars work was that it was so different to other photographers work which makes him stand out as a photographer. The mask was an amazing addition to the costume because it made me look like a really good model. It is still a self-portrait even though you are dressed up bvecause you created that character you are responsible for it.
Masks And Costume.
This is my mask. For this task i used: a paper bag, a glue stick, and multiple magazines.
I used a paper bag so the mask would go on my head. I cut of the handles, and I also used magazines. I used different types of magazines to find completely different styles of photos. I also looked in magazines to see if there was bigger photos of just a head. To see if it could be my main photo in the middle of the paper bag. I ripped pages out of magazines and then cut out the pieces of that page that i wanted. I looked through many magazines to try and find the perfect picture for the center and then spent time on trying to find color's that would look nice with the lady. I then came across this photo of a lady and cut her lips out then stuck it on top of the other lady's lips. I did the same thing with the lady's eye. |

Selfie Instruction Collage.
- Select the 6 images that you feel best represent you.
- Make a pile of these 6 pages on your desk.
- Take the top page and cut a hole in it (Note: it doesn't have to be perfect). Put both pieces at bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear it in half. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut out a shape at random. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and cut round an object. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page and tear a strip from the (top or bottom) edge. Put both pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Take the (new) top page, and cut or tear it in whichever way you choose. Put the pieces at the bottom of your pile.
- Place the A3 sheet of cartridge paper in front of you (portrait or landscape format).
- Without altering them, arrange the pieces of paper from your pile on the A3 sheet to create a pleasing collage. Carefully photograph your first arrangement.
- Again, without altering them, repeat this process, re-arranging the various elements on the A3 sheet until you are happy with the results. Photograph carefully.
- You may now adapt the pieces in any way you like - cutting, tearing etc. Make a new collage, this time sticking them to the A3 sheet of cartridge paper.
- Photograph your finished collage carefully.
- On your Selfies page add the title Selfie Instruction Collage.
- Copy and paste this list of instructions.
- Add a Gallery and upload the images you have taken today of your collages.
- Write a brief evaluation (WWW/EBI) reflecting on what it was like to make a collage by following instructions and how you feel about the results.
- Answer the question: Is the collage a self-portrait?
- If you complete all of this, try experimenting with layering the collage using the single-colour function on the photocopier.
WWW:
What i feel went well was that even though it dose not match when it all was next to each other in their original form, they now look really good together. Mine is more personal than others, it represents me as a child and the things i like now. |
EBI:
Even better if i used different varies of colours that didn't look so similar. Also if i added smaller pieces of the pictures and not so many large pictures. If i had cut the white edges of the photos. |
Is a collage a self-portrait?
The collage is a self-portrait because it has pictures of my face in it which makes it a self-portrait.

"Narrative Sequencing: Lee Friedland's Shadow Selfies."
In todays lesson we was given 12 photos taken by Lee (a famous photographer). We had to make a story out of at least 8 photos. We used exactly 8 photos and made a story out of the photos are peers did the same thing and no one had the same story.
WWW:
In my opinion it went well because the story was very different to others. It made sense and went really well with the pictures. |
EBI:
Even better if we had put the photos closer together and put arrows in between them and possibly wrote more to each photo. |
1) What is the role of the shadow in the sequences?
2) How did adding words impact the images?
It impacted the images by showing the story and showing that is what happened and you don't have to guess what happened
3) What has narrative sequencing taught us about the nature of photography?
It has taught us that if the photographer doesn't wright a caption then everyone will have a different perspective of the photo.

The Cubist Selfie.
To me this photo looks like Alma has taken 2 photos that are the same. She has taken one and cut certain parts out
WWW: What i think went well was the circle at the top has perfectly cut rectangles.
|
EBI: What i could have done better was try to make the 3rd cutout more clear with part of the earring there.

Josephson And Woodman
In Josephson’s photograph I can see that he is wearing a cowboy hat and I also can see that it is hot weather because everyone that you can see is wearing short sleeved tops. The lighting in the photo is natural you can see this because of how dark the shadow is, and how detailed the shadow of Josephson is. The card that Joseph is holding in front of the car looks like he has stuck a printed photo on it however there is no photo stuck on the car it is a hole or aperture. You can see this because of the shadow. There is four people, yet you can only see four arm which means you can only see one of each person's arm. In Woodman's photograph I can see a door and two people. I can tell it is a door because the frame stops, it does not carry on at the bottom. There is two people in this photograph but all you can see is one of there feet and one of their arm. One is holding a mirror in front of himself with his arm the front supporting the mirror. He is hiding: his other arm, his legs, his body and face. He seems to be hiding himself so no one can see him. The other person is hiding inside a sort of couch. which seems to contain some sort of hole at the bottom as you can see his feet at the bottom. They are similar in a way that you can see body parts like arms or legs however they are also very different because there is a lot more going on in Josephson's photograph.
The photographers both use of frames within fames however Josephson's has got six frames within frames in his photo. Woodman's has got four frames within frames. Josephson would have also had four frames but because of him having the shadows it added an extra two frames. The contrast in this photo is that when you first look at them you think Josephson's has card with a picture on it but there is a actually a hole in it. And Woodman's you first think it is a mirror until you realise it is actually a door frame, you can also find out it is a door because you can't see the photographer.
In the photos the surprising thing is that if you look close enough you can see a lot more than what you would see if you just look at it once. If you take a closer look and analyse the photos individually, carefully and properly you would be able to see a lot more than what meets the eye. Both photographers have both been individually very creative while taking/creating these photos. Woodman's photo is very unconventional because you don't really ever see a person with the couch sitting on them normally a person sit's on a couch. Josephson's photo is also unconventional to his approach of his self portrait because normally photographers don't take photos around people while holding a piece of card in mid air. This would have been very unusual for someone in the area to see.
Josephson's work is what I prefer to look at between these two photos. This is because there is so much going on yet you are mostly interested in looking at the piece of card. Your attention is drawn to the centre because there is the card there with a hole that looks like a photo has been stuck on it but it isn't. This may influence my work because I now what to go try this out in a busy area.
